  • Domestic or international shipment of unpaid orders or complimentary supply of seeds/plants: We do not take the risk of loss.

Warranty that a bamboo name is correct?
  • We do not guarantee that a bamboo name (botanical name and common name) has been correctly applied to a certain species/variety, but we will carefully examine the bamboo plants for identification.
  • Wrong identification will be corrected in the Catalogs as soon as there is sufficient proof for a name change.
  • Attempts in species identification of bamboo species raised from seeds can be started when seedlings have gained much in size, and when one or two culms have reached maturity – that is in two to three years. Whenever we have any doubts in naming, especially when we find deviations in the visible plant characteristics of mature or nearly mature plants compared with the species description, then we will publish a note in the species treatment (with the plant item number in square brackets) in the Compilation of Bamboo Seeds. Therefore, please, keep safely the item number for a later check or search.

Warranty for growth of plants and for germination of seeds?
  • We do not guarantee that plants will grow and seeds germinate as the growth process of plants and seeds after leaving the nursery is beyond our control and influence.
  • Seeds: Please read information on viability, germination, and growing seeds (links on the right column in the Bamboo Seeds Catalog).
  • Seed germination tests will be carried out at Baan Sammi Bamboo Garden. Depending on species, a limited number of seeds (between 1 and 100, usually 10-30 seeds) will be randomly taken from the first batch of seeds of a certain species as early as they arrive. The tests will take one to three weeks, rarely longer. All test results of the years 20162015, 2013-2014, and of earlier years, will be published. The tests are non-representative and for information only, and shall not constitute a warranty.

3 — INTERNATIONAL ORDERS (BAMBOO SEEDS)

Can bamboo seeds be exported from Thailand?
  • Yes, we export bamboo seeds throughout year. Usually, we send seeds by post.

Can bamboo seeds be imported into my country?
  • Every country has its own plant import regulations which can be very restrictive (e.g. USA) or very reasonable (e.g. Thailand).
  • We have successfully exported bamboo seeds to many countries, so why not also to your country? If you are not sure about the import terms of your country, please direct your inquiry to national authorities, e.g. State Customs Service, Departments of Agriculture or Forestry or Ecology, agricultural chamber.

When should I buy and sow seeds?
  • Bamboo seeds should be bought when fresh and as early as they are offered for sale because they might be out of stock soon.
  • Bamboo seeds will be announced as early as possible in our Bamboo Seeds Catalog.
  • We suggest buying bamboo seeds early and storing the seeds (caryopsis type of seeds) in your refrigerator for up to a few months, and sowing seeds when the season is suitable. Nevertheless, best is to sow seeds immediately upon arrival using proper breeding equipment if needed.

Is there a minimum order required?
  • There is no minimum order required if you do not need a Phytosanitary Certificate for bamboo import.
  • Minimum amount of money per order: No minimum is required.
  • Minimum quantity of seeds per order: Minimum quantity is 1 pack of seeds (defined by weight or by number of seeds) as described in the Bamboo Seeds Catalog, if not otherwise stated.
  • Some bamboo species may have a low germination rate. Therefore, consider to order a sufficiently large amount of seeds.
  • Seeds offered by weight: Your order can escalate in 1 gram increments starting from the minimum offered. For instance, if seed prices are given for 2 g, and for 5 g, you may order 3 g, 4 g, 6 g and so on as well. The prices for 3 and 4 g will be based on the 2 g price, the price for 6 g on the 5 g price.
  • Seeds offered by number: A pack contains a certain number of seeds, and you may order multiple packs.

Which mode of shipment is possible?
  • We send seeds by post as (1) Registered Airmail Letter, or (2) Registered Airmail Small Packet, or (3) Express Mail Service (EMS-Package). We will email you the track record upon request.
  • (1) Registered Airmail Letter: If the customer (as the importer) does not give shipment directives, we usually send packs of seeds in normal white B6 envelopes as Registered Airmail Letter, each letter up to 20 grams weight, sealed, without green Customs Declaration slip (CN22), and without invoice. Usually, each 20 g letter can contain packs of seeds up to about 8 grams as follows: 1 × 8 g pack, or 3 × 2 g packs, or 2 × 3 g packs, or 1 × 3 g + 1 × 2 g packs. For security reasons, we recommend not to insert more than 5-6 g of seeds per letter.
(1a) If seed quantity ordered requires 2 or more such letters, we will send them – for security reasons – at different dates (2-3 business days apart).
(1b) If we send you seeds in 2 or more letters, we can – for security reasons – split the quantity of the seeds of each species, or of the more expensive seeds only. If you want us to split the seeds, please, give us your shipment directives.
(1c) If explicitly required, we can send letters over 20 grams weight. A 50 grams letter can contain, for example, 6 × 4 g packs in a padded envelope. Usually, we use padded envelopes for letters over 20 grams.
  • (2) Registered Airmail Small Packet: We send by this mode only if the importer explicitly requires so. Small Packets are not sealed but closed with staples, with a green Customs Declaration slip (CN22) attached to the outside (which states contents and value). We do not include an invoice except if the importer explicitly demands. Small Packets up to 20 grams weight will be sent in brown envelopes of 18 × 10 cm size.
(2a) Usually, a Small Packet over 20 grams will be sent in a padded CD envelope, or padded B5 or B4 envelope.
(2b) If wanted, a shipment can be split – for security reasons – into two or more Small Packets, each up to 20 or 50 grams weight, and sent 2-3 business days apart, and quantity of seeds can be split as well.
  • (3) Express Mail Service (EMS-Package): Seeds can be sent in a sealed, normal white B6 envelope, or, usually for a weight of over 20 grams, in a padded envelope, or cardboard box. It goes with a customs declaration (contents, value). We do not include an invoice except if the importer explicitly demands. As compared to shipment modes (1) and (2), EMS is rather expensive and may reach its destination only a few days earlier. However, EMS is recommended for so-called "wet" seeds (e.g. Qiongzhuea seeds) which are known to loose viability within a few weeks.
  • (4) Regular Airmail Letter / Small Packet: If the importer explicitly wants us to send the shipment in regular mode, i.e. non-registered, then we will do so and omit registration fee from the shipment charge in the quotation.
  • If the importer wishes bamboo seeds being shipped by another carrier (e.g. UPS, FedEx, DHL), then the importer has to choose the carrier and settle shipment order in his country in advance, and send us the way bills.

What are the postage rates?
  • Postage rates depend on country of destination, weight, and type of postal service. Weight is usually up to 20 g, or up to 50 g.
.
What are the handling charges?
  • Handling charges comprise packing and packing material, and processing the package(s) to post office or other carrier.

How long takes a shipment until it reaches its destination?
  • When payment is credited on our account, it will take up to 3 business days to dispatch the shipment.
  • The shipment will take 2-3 business days to reach any destination within Thailand, or to leave the country for destinations abroad.
  • Thereafter, depending on the postal service of the country of destination, the shipment will arrive at the customer's address within 7-10 business days in most European countries, and in 2-7 weeks in countries of Asia and the Americas.

What about availability of bamboo seeds?
  • Available bamboo seeds are listed in the Bamboo Seeds Catalog.
  • You may place orders to any announced seeds listed in the Catalog, regardless if seeds are available from stock, temporarily out-of-stock, or not yet in stock. Pre-orders on bamboo seeds, if listed in the Catalog, are welcome and will be accepted.

4 — INTERNATIONAL ORDERS (BAMBOO PLANTS)

Can living bamboo plants be exported from Thailand?
  • Yes, it is allowed to export living bamboo plants from Thailand. There is no export permit required. Which documents are required depends only on the destination country, usually your home country. Most countries require a phytosanitary certificate and an invoice, a few other countries additionally require an import permit.

Can living bamboo plants be imported into my country?
  • Every country has its own plant import regulations which can be very restrictive (e.g. USA) or very reasonable (e.g. Thailand).
  • We have successfully exported living bamboo plants to the USA and many other countries worldwide since 2011, so it should be possible to import bamboos into your country as well. If you are not sure about the import terms of your country, please direct your inquiry to national authorities, e.g. State Customs Service, Departments of Agriculture or Forestry or Ecology, agricultural chamber, to find out
    — if you need an import permit,
    — if living plants of bamboo species are allowed to be imported, and if so
    — if there are any plant treatment requirements (application of fungicide, pesticide, removal of soil from the roots etc.) prior to shipment, and
    — if a Phytosanitary Certificate is required.
Usually, soil have to be removed from the plants, and a Phytosanitary Certificate is required.
  • In order to get a Phytosanitary Certificate issued by Thai plant health authorities, we need to show documents mainly for treatment requirements (fungicide formula, pesticide formula). Therefore, we require a link from a (governmental) website, or a printed copy of relevant pages.

What about correct bamboo names and warranty for plant growth?
  • Please read General Information (chapter 1, above).
  • Bamboo plants need to be labeled with their botanical species name.
  • Bamboo plants undergo utmost stress from bare-root treatment, transport and transplanting. We therefore select only strong (not necessarily big) plants for export.

Which bamboos can be selected for international shipping?
  • The following plant materials can be considered as suitable for international shipping:
    (1) Rooted bamboo plant divisions, comprising of rhizomes and trimmed stems and branches with or without leaves, (2) two to three years or older seedlings and seedling divisions, usually with leaves, (3) rooted or rootless leptomorph rhizomes, (4) pre-rooted culm cuttings and branch cuttings, (5) non-rooted cuttings, and (6) caryopsis type of seeds.
  • Species/varieties/cultivars available for international shipping are all bamboo plant and seed offers in our catalogs. However, to be suitable for shipping, the plants should not be too big, too tall, too small, or too weak, and should be available at the date of export. Please, inquire whether certain species etc. are available, and in suitable condition.
  • Cuttings, if not rooted and not potted, are usually not listed in our catalog. Cuttings can be provided from some species of Bambusa, Gigantochloa, and Dendrocalamus. Please inquire if interested in.
  • Seedlings, if younger than two years are usually too weak and unsuitable for international shipping, except when bare-root treatment can be avoided, and when seedlings can be hand-carried on a flight.

Is there a minimum order required?
  • Minimum amount of money per order: No minimum is required.
  • Minimum quantity of plants per order: No minimum is required.
  • Shipping and especially bare-root treatment cause much stress to living bamboo plants. Although we only select bamboos suitable for international shipment, re-cultivation upon arrival may not always be successful. We therefore recommend ordering not less than 2-3 plants per wanted species/variety.

In what seasons bamboo plants can be shipped abroad?
  • Potted plants are usually available year-round and can be prepared for shipment anytime.
  • Field-grown plants can be prepared for shipment usually from April to July, late shooting bamboos till August.
  • Shipping to the northern Hemisphere from November to March could enhance the risk of weakening and damaging the plants (e.g. leaves and culms by cold weather, ceasing young shoots from stress).

What about availability of bamboos for export?
  • To check availability, please refer to the Bamboo Plants Catalog, or Bamboo Plants in Our Nursery. Then, we have to check if the available bamboos are suitable for export.
  • As bamboos need to have the right size for export, please, let us know your requirements by email as early as possible to find out if the size needed, and the quantity wanted, is available.

What charges apply?
  • We will send you a quotation which comprises the following items:
  • (1) Plants: Their unit prices apply, please see from our Bamboo Plants Catalog.
  • (2) Bare-root treatment: 500 Baht per plant for the first 5 plants, 400 Baht per plant from 6th plant onwards. This charge does not apply to non-rooted cuttings.
  • (3) Treatment with insecticide: 500 Baht per treatment of all plants per shipment. The plants will be treated with insecticide only if explicitly required (by the plant health authorities of the destination country). Further, if specific active ingredients are required and need to be declared, all this information must be supplied by the importer/customer.
  • (4) Treatment with fungicide: 500 Baht per treatment of all plants per shipment. The plants will be treated with fungicide only if explicitly required (by the plant health authorities of the destination country). Further, if specific active ingredients are required and need to be declared, all this information must be supplied by the importer/customer.
  • (5) Application of gel: To keep moisture during transportation, mainly to roots and rhizomes, but also to cuttings as a whole, a gel will be applied provided this treatment is allowed by the plant health authorities of the destination country. Charge is 50 Baht per piece of plant material.
  • (6) Labeling and packing of bare-rooted plants, cuttings, marcottings etc. Charge is 50 Baht per piece of plant material.
  • (7) Phytosanitary Certificate: All-inclusive charge is 1,200–1,900 Baht per shipment. Usually, there is only 1 certificate required per shipment.
  • (8) Packing and transfer within Chiang Mai: This includes all packing material and transfer to the carrier, e.g. post office, air cargo station at the airport. Standard charge is 900 Baht, but can be lower for very small shipments less than 2 kg, and higher for shipments over 10 kg total weight.
  • (9) Shipment charges: These charges depend on the carrier. Standard shipment is Express Mail Service (EMS) by Thailand Post. Their charges depend on total weight and destination country of shipment. We can calculate and base your charges on weight ranges of up to 2 kg, 5 kg, 7 kg, 10 kg, and plus further 2 kg up to 20 kg maximum total weight. If you prefer another carrier, e.g. DHL, Fedex, then you need to open an account with any of these carriers, pay in advance (or supply a sort of payment guarantee to the carrier), and send us the way bill. If you prefer shipment by air cargo, please let us know name and international abbreviation of the destination airport, then we can calculate shipment charges.

Which mode of shipment is possible?
  • Hand-carry (carry-on or checked-in baggage) on an international flight departing from Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX).
  • Air cargo service (shipment to certain airport destinations), dispatched at CNX.
  • Postal shipment by Thailand Post (ไปรษณีย์ไทย) to the receiver's address: EMS package up to 20 kg. EMS is the fastest mode, which is the only recommended for shipment of living plants. Postage rates depend on country of destination, weight, and type of postal service. You may check the rates in Thai Baht (THB) on the Thailand Post website.
  • If the importer wishes shipment to be executed by another carrier (e.g. UPS, FedEx, DHL), then the importer has to choose the carrier and settle prepaid shipment order in his home country in advance, and hand over the Shipment Waybill to the carrier in Chiang Mai. Otherwise, carriers in Chiang Mai will not accept international shipment of living plants.

Mode of payment?
  • Please see previous chapter: International Orders (Bamboo Seeds).
